After 1,700 years, Buddhas fall to Taliban dynamite

After 1,700 years, Buddhas fall to Taliban dynamite

THE world's two largest standing Buddhas - one of them 165ft high - were blown up by the Taliban in Afghanistan at the weekend.

A Buddha of Bamiyan statue stands over 150 feet high above a small town situated at the foot of the Hindu Kush mountains of central Afghanistan, prior to its destruction
After failing to destroy the 1,700-year-old sandstone statues of Buddha with anti-aircraft and tank fire, the Taliban brought a lorryload of dynamite from Kabul. A Western observer said: "They drilled holes into the torsos of the two statues and then placed dynamite charges inside the holes to blow them up."
The operation to wreck the statues carved into a cliff in the Bamiyan Valley in the Hindu Kush mountains of central Afghanistan was supervised by Mullah Obaidullah, the Taliban defence minister. There has been an international outcry since Mullah Mohammed Omar, the Taliban leader, issued a special edict on Feb 26 ordering the destruction of all non-Islamic statues.
Kofi Annan, the United Nations Secretary-General, had pleaded with the Taliban's foreign minister, Wakil Ahmad Muttawakil, in Islamabad yesterday to save Afghanistan's cultural heritage. He was told that all other "moveable statues" - including more than a dozen smaller Buddha statues in the Kabul Museum - had also been destroyed.
Mr Annan, who spent half an hour with Mullah Wakil during the first leg of his South Asia tour, showed dismay and frustration while talking to reporters. He said: "They will be doing themselves a great deal of disservice and no religious leaders from the Islamic world have supported the edict. I told them you have to respect what is sacred to others."
Mr Annan added that it was "not going to be easier now to raise money" from the international community for the humanitarian crisis unfolding in Afghanistan. More than one million people have been displaced by the fighting and drought. But, no government has told me categorically that they would not help the desperate people of Afghanistan."
Mullah Wakil said the work of destroying the Bamiyan cliff statues had started already, "but they are very tough ones".But his mention of steel rods and cement walls which were erected in the 1930s to bolster the back of the standing Buddhas and which are now exposed made it clear that the frontal part of the statues had been blown up.
Mullah Wakil insisted that the edict was an internal matter for Afghanistan and had been "excessively exagerrated in the outside world and the media". He said the Taliban had no intention to disrespect any other religion. "We do admit the relics were the cultural heritage of Afghanistan, but the part that contradicts our Islamic beliefs we would not like to have them any more."
Mullah Wakil said the edict had been under discussion by the Taliban authorities for more than a year and did not permit the removal of the statues to other countries - which Japan, India and New York's Metropolitan Museum had offered to do. He said the Taliban would rebuild the Kabul Museum to show off the remaining historical objects, which do not represent living things, which are forbidden according to the Taliban's harsh interpretation of Islam.
The destruction of the statues is almost certain to lead to even greater condemnation and the isolation of the Taliban by the international community. In January, the United Nations Security Council imposed sanctions on the Taliban.

  • Russian women, 18 and 20, and a man, 19, admitted to robbing a grave
  • Student vets dug up body of woman, 84, and cut off head and fingers
  • Group then boiled the severed body parts in their university dormitory
  • Told police they intended to use the head 'on display or as an ash tray'
Three Russian university students dug up the corpse of an elderly woman and severed her head with a spade in order to turn it into an ash tray.
Anastasiya Burlakova, 20, Natalia Ovcharova, 18, and Konstantin Zadvinsky, 19, admitted to robbing the grave of an 84-year-old woman in Novocherkassk, south-west Russia last year.
The trio, all studying to become veterinarians, then brought the corpse back to their college dormitory where they cut off the head and fingers and boiled the remains.
Macabre: Anastasiya Burlakova, 20, pictured, and her two friends Natalia Ovcharova, 18, and Konstantin Zadvinsky, 19, admitted to digging up the corpse of an 84-year-old woman in Novocherkassk, Russia

Disturbing: Miss Burlakova, seen posing for pictures on social media, told police that the trio had taken the skull in order to 'keep it on display, or make an ash-tray'
Despite confessing to the crimes, the three trainee veterinarians walked free from court in Novocherkassk and will be allowed to continue their studies.
The family of the unnamed woman, who had died in January 2014, has expressed outrage at the 'soft' three year suspended jail sentences imposed by a judge.

Miss Burlakova and classmates Mr Zadvinsky and Miss Ovcharova, dug up the body from the local cemetery in November last year.
The trio brought the remains back to their hostel, cutting off the head and fingers, which they intended to use as fortune telling runes.
They boiled the head, and stashed the rest of the corpse under a bed.
Admission: Mr Zadvinsky, left, admitted to severing the woman's head with a spade after which he, Miss Ovcharova, right, and Miss Burlakova returned to their college dorms where they boiled the skull and fingers

All three confessed that they were deeply interested in black magic and mysterious things.
Fellow students reported an unpleasant smell from the room in the dormitory block and called police, leading to the discovery of the corpse.

Miss Burlakova told police in her interrogation: 'We wanted to get a human skull.'
Asked why, she said: 'Either just to keep it on display, or to make an ash-tray.'
Mr Zadvinsky said: 'We dug the grave and cut off the head and fingers... to make an ashtray.'
A police source said the male student used a spade to sever the head.
'He confessed that he was scared of god when doing all this so he was praying in his mind while he went about it,' he said.
The source added that 'the parents of all students were in deep shock and stress'.
A police source also said that Mr Zadvinsky confessed to an interest in ancient German religion, and he needed runes for fortune telling.
He liked to spend time at the city cemetery 'to calm him down'.
Miss Burlakova confessed that she liked going to the cemetery while Miss Ovcharova admitted she slept near graves with her friends.
The students were spared jail because they had no criminal records.
Their teachers at the veterinary department of Novocherkassk College of Industrial Technologies and Management gave them positive references.
The judge also noted they had cooperated with investigators.
Relatives of the unnamed dead woman are shocked and have submitted a claim for 'moral damages' and launched an appeal seeking 900,000 roubles compensation - £9,400

I thought Muslims are forbidden to touch let alone rear dogs and gambling is a big sin for all Muslims.  So the Afghans are the biggest sinners?

Here's Why William Shatner Returning for Star Trek 3 Makes Sense

Here's Why William Shatner Returning for Star Trek 3 Makes Sense

By Mike Bracken

 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Ppo5YIYwTM

As is to be expected, the Internet is all a-buzz with the latest rumors concerning Star Trek 3. It’s been a crazy week for the third installment in the rebooted franchise – we’ve learned it will probably start shooting in February, that the story will most likely take place in deep space during the crew’s five year mission, and that the characters should hew more closely to their TV counterparts. That’s a lot of info – but the real bombshell was the revelation that William Shatner might re-don his Starfleet tunic and appear in the new film. Naturally, like all things Star Trek, this news provoked two distinct and opposite reactions: fan jubilation and fan derision. I think bringing Shatner in for a part in the new film is actually a good idea, and here are a few reasons why.

The most obvious rationale for bringing Shatner back into the fold is plain old fan service. I know some of the Star Trek fanbase is really tired of seeing the new films (which went out of their way to try to divorce themselves from original canon, then take every opportunity they can find to tie back into it…) present updated riffs on classic Star Trek. I can even sympathize with that viewpoint at times, if only because it doesn’t feel fair to the new crew to constantly have them playing second fiddle to fan nostalgia.

That being said, having Shatner return as Kirk is a bit more interesting than working Khan into the second film, or any of the other nods littered throughout Star Trek ’09 or Into Darkness. This is Captain Kirk – without him and Leonard Nimoy, we don’t have a Star Trek to reboot. We haven’t seen Kirk and Spock together since 1991. It’s time for this to happen, even if it’s just a tiny cameo. In fact, maybe it’s best served by being a tiny cameo where we can all have a minute to remember what made us love this franchise in the first place and then move on.

Abrams and company had an opportunity to do this with 2009 film, which gave Nimoy’s Spock a pretty prominent role, but excised Shatner completely. Had Abrams’ worked both characters into Trek ’09, we could have had our moment to acknowledge two beloved characters, then gotten on with getting to know the new crew. Instead, the Shatner omission has made it feel like there’s unfinished business to be addressed – business that should have been dealt with two films ago.

There’s an issue of fairness and respect here, too. Leonard Nimoy and William Shatner are both irreplaceable parts of what made Star Trek into a cultural phenomenon. Life – and filmmaking – aren’t always fair. But bringing Nimoy back for both films (although, really, they shouldn’t have bothered with Into Darkness), while leaving Kirk dead in the older continuity was a horrible decision at the time – and has grown even worse in retrospect. Shatner made his displeasure with being cut out of the 2009 entry well known, and I can understand why he was stung by it. Star Trek is, and always will be, the thing we identify him with as an actor. Captain Kirk was his career-defining role. Including his friend/nemesis Nimoy in both of the reboots while keeping Shatner on the sidelines was a lousy thing to do, no matter how much of a jerk the man can be at times.

This is to say nothing of the fact that Paramount has already made a big deal about the new film opening in 2016 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the original series. How can you have a 50th anniversary celebration without Shatner being part of it in some fashion? You really can’t.

If that doesn’t convince you, then maybe this will – William Shatner is 83 years old. He’s in relatively good health, but once you cross into your eighth decade, you’ve entered the latter stages of your life. There aren’t going to be a lot of opportunities left for Shatner to appear on the screen as Captain Kirk. Same goes for Leonard Nimoy, who’s also 83. If Nimoy were to be done, at least we could look back at the first reboot and happily acknowledge that we got to see Spock again. To see Kirk, we have to go back to 1994’s Star Trek Generations. That’s two whole decades ago. It’s time to change that, before time runs out once and for all. Let’s not have that happen, and give Shatner the sendoff he deserves should this be the last time he appears as Kirk.

What do you guys think? Are you onboard with a Shatner cameo in the new Star Trek, or would you rather move forward with the new crew and leave the past in the past?

World Cup 2014: 5 Reasons Spain Lost So Miserably In The Group Stage

World Cup 2014: 5 Reasons Spain Lost So Miserably In The Group Stage

on June 18 2014 5:45 PM

As the defending World Cup and back-to-back European Champions, Spain entered the 2014 World Cup with lofty expectations to repeat, as many experts considered Vicente del Bosque’s squad to be among the greatest national teams in history.
What followed in the group stage sent shockwaves through world soccer. Spain not only lost both games, but were outscored 7-1 by the Netherlands and Chile.
What could possibly have prompted such a flame out? How does such a talented team lose so early in the group stage?
Here are five reasons why Spain couldn’t reach the knockout phase:

Tough Competition
While Spain boast a world-class roster, they faced two very good squads. The Netherlands have an excellent attack, and entered the match with a chip on their shoulder after losing to Spain in the 2010 final in South Africa. Many experts were quick to point out that Chile boast several quality players, including Arturo Vidal, Alexis Sanchez, Eduardo Vargas, Mauricio Isla, and goalkeeper Claudio Bravo. As a South American team, they had a strong contingent of supporters in attendance in Rio de Janeiro.
Predictable Strategy
With the exception of striker Diego Costa, the 2014 roster looked rather similar to the 2010 roster. When a starting XI has a familiar look, it is not difficult for the opposing head coach to game plan. Spain probably needed a shakeup with young players like Jese, Asier Illaramendi, and Alvaro Morata to throw off the competition.

 Poor Goalkeeping
While Iker Casillas is considered one of the best goalkeepers in the world, he has been criticized by some for lackadaisical play. His former Real Madrid manager, Jose Mourinho, even benched Casillas in favor of backup Diego Lopez in 2013. Spain could have received a better effort from their man in the net against the Netherlands and Chile. Pepe Reina would probably have been a better choice.
Resting On Laurels
Spain failed to play like Spain, and it seemed as though the squad was expecting to cruise through group play. The overconfidence looked apparent in their passing, which seemed erratic compared to how they played in Euro 2012 and the 2010 World Cup. Their opponents looked one step ahead of them. It was a rude awakening in the second half against the Netherlands, when Spain surrendered four goals in 45 minutes.

Gunning For Goliath
After so much success, Spain may have had “success fatigue.” It’s difficult to maintain such great play for so long, as Brazil proved since Pele’s retirement (Brazil won just two World Cups since 1970). Spain also seemed to be a much different team without their star center back and unsung hero Carles Puyol, whose absence appeared to be too much to overcome. The Netherlands and Chile seemed to relish the opportunity to take down a somewhat vulnerable Spain squad and knew that the champions' reign couldn't last.
In some ways, Spain's downfall should have been expected. Three of the last four world champions couldn’t get out of the first round. Spain had a major challenge in defending their title, and their impressive run in recent years had to end some time.

Chinese fan dies after staying up too late to watch the World Cup

Chinese fan dies after staying up too late to watch the World Cup

  • Chinese fan found dead in his home after Holland 5-1 win over Spain
  • Sleep deprivation from staying up to watch World Cup believed to be cause
  • Parts of Brazil are 11 hours behind China, with games airing there in the middle of the night

A Chinese fan has reportedly died after after staying up for too many nights in a row to watch the World Cup.
A 25-year-old man was found in his home in Suzhou, an area near Shanghai, sat infront of a TV set just hours after Holland's 5-1 thumping of Spain on Friday.
Salvador, the Brazilian city where the game took place on Friday, is 11 hours behind Shanghai, meaning fans in China have to stay up all through the night to follow the tournament.

With the game kicking off at 4pm local time, it did not finish in China until around 5 in the morning, and doctors believe his death could have been caused by the sleep deprivation.
Medical experts have now warned football fans in China about the dangers should they sacrifice sleep during the tournament.
It's not the first time a Chinese football fan has died after staying awake to watch the game.
During Euro 2012 one supporter spent 11 sleepless nights watching every game of the tournament and died from exhaustion.
Chinese hospitals also saw a surge in patients admitted with symptoms of exhaustion during the World Cups in 2006 and 2010.
Robin van Persie and Arjen Robben both scored twice as Oranje ran riot against the current world champions.

West dishonest over Syria unrest, supporting terrorists: Chossudovsky

West dishonest over Syria unrest, supporting terrorists: Chossudovsky
http://www.presstv.com/detail/2013/05/29/306026/west-insincere-in-its-syria-policy/

Below is a rough transcription of the interview.

Press TV: Mr. Chossudovsky, today we have Israel threatening Moscow possibly with force.

How does Israel play into this equation and how much physical involvement can we expect from Israel?

Chossudovsky: Well, first I should say that Israel is supporting the insurgency. In other words, it is supporting al-Qaeda in Syria.

This is not known to public opinion but through the Golan Heights, it is supporting terrorist units of al-Nusrah, which are fighting the Syrian government.

It has logistics, weapon supplies, Israeli vehicles going into the Syrian territory, it also has a hospital facility for the rebels located in the Golan Heights.

So, in effect, right from the outset Israel has been involved in supporting the various factions, the so-called Islamist factions, which are, as we know, mercenaries trained in Qatar and Saudi Arabia.

So, in effect, we have to ask ourselves who are the main military actors in the Syrian war theater. The al-Nusrah rebels, which allegedly represent the opposition, are supported by the Western military alliance and Israel.

These are the foot soldiers of the Western military alliance and they are waging a war against the Syrian people.

Now when the European Union decides to lift the embargo, the arms embargo, what they really have in mind ..., it is not to say that they have not been supplying the rebels with weapons, all the time they have; but what they have in mind is to channel military aid to this mercenary force, which is supported by foreign powers.

That is a very different proposition to the Russians or Iran for that matter, through bilateral agreements providing military assistance to a sovereign country and to a government and in effect what we are also dealing with is..., well it is illegal under the international law but it is also in violation of the US’ anti-terror legislation.

Press TV: Mr. Chossudovski, recently US senator John McCain went to Syria via Turkey. How do you interpret this visit?

Chossudovsky: Well, John McCain['s trip] is actually in blatant violation of the US’ guidelines on anti-terrorism.

There is an anti-terrorist list, there is a list of terrorist organizations, which is made up by the State Department and John Kerry is negotiating, interfacing, with representatives of that terrorist organization and the same thing is true for John McCain when he crosses into Syria or the same thing is true with the former ambassador to Syria Robert Steven Ford, who is also supporting these terrorists.

So we have to distinguish between military aid through official channels, from government to government, which is what the Russians are providing to Syria on the one hand and the type of assistance which Israel, Britain, France, the United States, are channeling to an illegal organization according to their own criteria.

So in other words they should be arrested on anti-terrorist charges because they are in violation of international law.

Press TV: Despite the fact that the European Union has lifted arms embargo on Syria, how optimistic are you that the Geneva II talks would bear fruit and resolve the Syrian crisis politically?

Chossudovsky: Well, I think that the Western leaders are, in effect, attempting to build peace and democracy by threatening war. Essentially that is what they are doing, heightening the threats, channeling weapons to the terrorists, incidentally those terrorist have been decimated by the Syrian Armed forced, so in effect the Western military alliance is in a dead end.

So, they are now considering all the options but essentially if they were concerned and sincerely committed to the peace process, they would immediately cease supporting a terrorist organization which is linked to al-Qaeda and which is involved in atrocities and killings in Syria.

Singapore riot: Four Indians face fresh charges

Singapore riot: Four Indians face fresh charges

PTI Dec 27, 2013, 07.47PM IST
SINGAPORE: Fresh charges were on Friday slapped on four Indians, part of 25 alleged rioters who participated in Singapore's worst outbreak of violence in over 40 years.
Earlier, all 25 Indians faced one rioting charge each, punishable by up to seven years in prison and caning.
But, additional charges were filed against Chinnappa Prabakaran, 23, for instigating a group of Indians to set fire to an ambulance while Bose Prabakar, 29, was accused of assaulting an auxiliary police officer by kicking him.

Moorthy Kabildev, 24, also faced an additional charge of punching a woman coordinator of the bus which ran over 33-year-old Indian pedestrian Sakthivel Kumaravelu.
Arumugam Karthik, 24, now faces two new charges: one of setting fire to a police car with one other person; and another of throwing pieces of concrete and flipping over a police car with some others.
The prosecution is looking to revoke their bail, or increase their bail amount to 40,000-60,000 Singapore dollars, The Straits Times reported.
Since the court offered bail to all 25 accused on Tuesday after submitting sureties of 20,000 Singapore dollars, only two are out on bail, Channel News Asia reported.
Chinnathambi Malesan, 22, was today released on bail besides Arun Kaliamurthy, a 28-year-old tourist in Singapore on a social visit pass.
The court allowed Malesan's employer to post bail, even though his employer is a Malaysian of Chinese-origin.
Meanwhile, one of the accused, 32-year-old Chinnappa Vijayaragunatha Poopathi, has indicated to the court that he might plead guilty, Channel News Asia reported.
The cases of 24 accused would be mentioned again on January 29 while Kaliamurthy's case would be heard on December 30.
Fifty-six Indians and a Bangladeshi have been deported from Singapore for alleged involvement in the riot in Little India, a precinct of Indian-origin businesses, eateries and pubs where most South Asian workers take their Sunday break.
The trouble started after a private bus fatally knocked down Kumaravelu in Little India on December 8. Some 400 migrant workers were involved in the rampage that left 39 police and civil defence staff injured and 25 vehicles -- including 16 police cars -- damaged.
Singapore previously witnessed violence of such scale during race riots in 1969.
Singapore authorities will implement new traffic arrangements in Little India on Sundays from this Sunday to smoothen operations for private bus services plying in the Little India area and "facilitate safe passenger activities along the road", The Straits Times reported.

World's first curved smartphone hits stores in South Korea

World's first curved smartphone hits stores in South Korea

Samsung did not say when the Galaxy Round, which has a concave handset designed to fit in the curve of the user's palm, will be available internationally. It is priced at about 1.08 million won ($1,000).

A model holds Samsung's first 'curved' smartphone Galaxy Round, a 5.7-inch handset with a display that is slightly rounded on both sides, at the Electronics and IT Industry Fair in Goyang, north of Seoul, on October 10, 2013. Samsung's first smartphone with a curved display screen enters the South Korean market on October 10, as the electronics giant seeks to maintain its lead in the increasingly saturated market.

Samsung launched the world's first smartphone with a curved display screen on Thursday, as the electronics giant seeks to maintain its lead in the increasingly saturated market.
Galaxy Round -- a 5.7-inch concave handset that fits the curve of a user's palm -- has hit stores in South Korea but Samsung did not say when the new phone will be available globally.
Curved screens -- billed as lighter and thinner than current display panels -- are at a nascent stage in display technology, which is shifting towards flexible panels that are bendable or can even be rolled or folded.
The new phone -- powered by Google's Android system and featuring a 2.3 GHz quad-core processor --is priced at about 1.08 million won ($1,000), Samsung said.

"The display (of Galaxy Round) is ergonomically shaped to fit the curve of a hand and comfortably embrace an ear and cheek during a phone conversation," SK Telecom, the country's top wireless operator, said in a statement.
The new phone allows users to check information such as missed calls, text messages, remaining battery life and the current time and date more easily when the screen is locked.
When listening to music, users can switch between songs on a playlist by placing the phone on a flat surface and pressing down on the left or right side to tilt the device, which automatically detects the movement.
The curved screen is made of plastic, instead of the glass that is commonly used in smartphones, and as a result the handset is slightly lighter.

Samsung said the phone weighs 154 grams (0.33 pounds), 10 percent less than the firm's similar-sized Galaxy Note III oversized smartphone.
"This certainly is not a ground-breaking, game-changing product," one tech blogger said in a review.
"But it fits quite nicely in my hand... and the images look slightly deeper when seen on a curved screen," he said.
The latest device arrived as global smartphone makers vie for growth in the increasingly competitive market.

Samsung -- the world's top maker of smartphones and mobile phones in general -- in January unveiled the prototype of a bendable display called "Youm".
Samsung's smaller rival LG said last week it had started mass production of curved display panels for smartphones and is reportedly set to unveil its own curved smartphone this month.
But companies still face a major challenge in making other handset components -- such as batteries -- that can bend with the rest of the unit.
Curved displays are already commercially available in large-screen televisions offered by companies including Samsung and LG.
The displays are supposed to offer a more immersive viewing experience but are significantly more expensive than standard screens.

28 Years in Prison for Corrupt Ex-Detroit Mayor

(AP) 28 years in prison for corrupt ex-Detroit mayor
By ED WHITE
Associated Press
DETROIT
Former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick has been sentenced to 28 years in prison for corruption that turned city hall into a pay-to-play parlor.

Kilpatrick was convicted earlier this year of two dozen crimes, including racketeering conspiracy, bribery and extortion. There was evidence of shakedowns, kickbacks and strong-arm tactics to reaped tens of thousands of dollars and other benefits from people who wanted city business.

The sentence was a victory for prosecutors, who had recommended Kilpatrick serve at least 28 years in prison, while defense attorneys argued for no more than 15 years.

Kilpatrick quit office in 2008 after a different scandal involving sexually explicit text messages and an extramarital affair. The 43-year-old Democrat served as mayor for nearly seven years.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

Former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick returns to court Thursday to face what is likely to be one of the longer sentences in recent cases of public corruption, the result of two dozen convictions that range from bribery to extortion to tax crimes.

While the city's finances foundered, Kilpatrick was shaking down contractors, ensuring that a pal got millions in city work and turning a nonprofit fund to help struggling Detroiters into a personal slush fund, according to evidence at his five-month trial.

Federal prosecutors are recommending Kilpatrick serve at least 28 years in prison, while defense attorneys are hoping the sentence doesn't exceed 15 years.

"He created a `pay-to-play' system for the provision of city goods and services, which compromised vast swaths of city government, including the water and sewer system, the convention center, the pension system, casino developments and recreation centers," prosecutors said in a court filing last week. "City government essentially became up for grabs for the right price."

Kilpatrick, 43, quit office in 2008 because of a different scandal involving sexually explicit text messages and an extramarital affair.

He was forced out while the auto industry was nearing collapse and Detroit's unstable finances were deteriorating even more. The city now is run by a state-appointed emergency manager, Kevyn Orr, who took Detroit into Chapter 9 bankruptcy last summer as a last-ditch effort to fix billions of dollars in debt.

"Kilpatrick is not the main culprit of the city's historic bankruptcy, which is the result of larger social and economic forces at work for decades. But his corrupt administration exacerbated the crisis," prosecutors said.

Defense attorneys called it a "cheap shot," noting Kilpatrick has been out of office for five years.

"The government's attempt to roll the city of Detroit's 2013 bankruptcy filing into the ... case oversimplifies the complex problems that Detroit has faced for more than five decades," Harold Gurewitz and Margaret Raben wrote.

They want U.S. District Judge Nancy Edmunds to give some credit to Kilpatrick for the 2006 Super Bowl and 2005 baseball All-Star Game in Detroit, as well as 75 new downtown businesses.

"The almost constant barrage of critical, hostile and deprecating commentary in the media that began within about two years after he took office has served to obscure numerous and significant accomplishments of Kilpatrick and his administration," defense attorneys said.

Agents who pored over bank accounts and credit cards said Kilpatrick spent $840,000 beyond his salary during his time as mayor. His trial attorney, James Thomas, tried to portray the money as generous gifts from political supporters who opened their wallets for birthdays or holidays.

In their sentencing memo, Kilpatrick's lawyers made a point that's commonly argued in cases of high-profile criminals: Our client already has suffered deeply.

Kilpatrick is "infamous, destitute and disgraced," the attorneys said.

Malala gives hope to poor girls in Pakistan

Malala gives hope to poor girls in Pakistan

Malala, a 16-year-old Pakistani student, was shot by the Taliban in 2012 for her activism for girl's education. But as her struggle and commitment to equality continue, the issue has taken on a global dimension.

A Taliban attacker shot Malala Yousafzai in the head in October last year. After receiving initial treatment from an army hospital, she was flown to Britain for further surgery and treatment, including reconstruction of her skull. Last month, she resumed her studies in Birmingham.

Malala has received various awards for her courage and dedication and was recently named as one of the nominees for the Noble Prize for Peace, making her the youngest nominee in history.

After Malala was shot, a fund was established in her name by a US-based non-government organization Vital Voices Global Partnership as well as other international organizations and individuals. Vital Voices Global Partnership was founded by former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in 1997 and it works for the empowerment of girls and women.

Girl's Education in Swat: still a long way to go
Swat Valley is a residual district of Pakistan's North Western province Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The home of about 20 million people lacks the basic amenities of life, including education and health. A large number of girls have no access to the basic right of education even in the second decade of the 21st century. Most of the girls allowed by their families to attend school have to quit after primary education, which is a mere 5 years.
"There are 509 girls' primary schools in Swat providing education to a total of 99,274 girls" according to Mrs. Dilshad Begum, District Education Officer (DEO) in Swat. "The number of female middle schools is only 56, where 8,500 students are registered, while about 7000 female students are getting education in 34 higher secondary schools," she added.

Dilshad Begum told DW that before the Taliban occupation, the trend of female education was much more positive than now. The Islamists have banned girls from joining schools and destroyed many of their schools. "That has affected their education badly and now only 24 percent of girls are in school."
Not only do not enough schools exist to accommodate girls, the ones who do go to school have to sit on the ground during class because there is no furniture available in many schools in areas like Bahrain, Kalam, Matiltan, and many other places in Swat. To top it off, there is a shortage of teaching staff.
"At the moment we need 842 female teachers for our primary school," according to DEO Dilshad Begum. "If staff is not hired timely, the future of girls will be darkened even further."
Malala Fund's first grant
Malala Yousufzai has set up a $45,000-grant for girls' education in Swat. She made the announcement in a video played on the first day of the Women in the World summit in New York on April 4.
"We are going to educate 40 girls, and I invite all of you to support the Malala Fund," she said. "Let us turn the education of 40 girls into 40 million girls."
Ahmed Khan, a close friend of Malala's father and principal of Sarosh Academy of Education in Swat's largest city Mingora said, "Malala and her father Zia-ud Din Yousufzai are doing their best for education in Swat."

Khan, who is also the spokesperson of Swat National Jirga, told DW, "The United Nation's special peace envoy and Hollywood star Angelina Jolie has donated 200,000 US dollars to the Malala Foundation." He added that the $45,000 from the Malala Fund will be allocated to an NGO in Islamabad and will support 40 poor girls aged five to 15 in Swat. He mentioned that the fund will pay for their school fees, daily expenses, and provide them with a monthly allowance.
"These little girls would have otherwise been forced to work to support their families, entering the labor force, instead of going to school."
The principal of Sarosh Academy also told DW that the Malala Foundation would soon present the Malala Award, which will be given to people in various walks of life for their contribution to girls' education. A cash amount of 50,000 rupees (around 385 euros) will be the part of award.
Khan hopes, "Once the Malala initiative catches the public eye, funds through this foundation will play a pivotal role in female education in Swat."
