Three Russian university students dug up the corpse of an elderly woman and severed her head with a spade in order to turn it into an ash tray. 

Anastasiya Burlakova, 20, Natalia Ovcharova, 18, and Konstantin Zadvinsky, 19, admitted to robbing the grave of an 84-year-old woman in Novocherkassk, south-west Russia last year.

The trio, all studying to become veterinarians, then brought the corpse back to their college dormitory where they cut off the head and fingers and boiled the remains.

Despite confessing to the crimes, the three trainee veterinarians walked free from court in Novocherkassk and will be allowed to continue their studies.

The family of the unnamed woman, who had died in January 2014, has expressed outrage at the 'soft' three year suspended jail sentences imposed by a judge.

Miss Burlakova and classmates Mr Zadvinsky and Miss Ovcharova, dug up the body from the local cemetery in November last year.

The trio brought the remains back to their hostel, cutting off the head and fingers, which they intended to use as fortune telling runes.

They boiled the head, and stashed the rest of the corpse under a bed.

The three student veterinarians walked free from court after getting support from their college lecturers, but the family of the woman whose grave they robbed (pictured centre) are demanding compensation

All three confessed that they were deeply interested in black magic and mysterious things.

Fellow students reported an unpleasant smell from the room in the dormitory block and called police, leading to the discovery of the corpse.

Miss Burlakova told police in her interrogation: 'We wanted to get a human skull.'

Asked why, she said: 'Either just to keep it on display, or to make an ash-tray.'

Mr Zadvinsky said: 'We dug the grave and cut off the head and fingers... to make an ashtray.'

A police source said the male student used a spade to sever the head.

'He confessed that he was scared of god when doing all this so he was praying in his mind while he went about it,' he said.

The source added that 'the parents of all students were in deep shock and stress'.

A police source also said that Mr Zadvinsky confessed to an interest in ancient German religion, and he needed runes for fortune telling.

He liked to spend time at the city cemetery 'to calm him down'.

Miss Burlakova confessed that she liked going to the cemetery while Miss Ovcharova admitted she slept near graves with her friends.

The students were spared jail because they had no criminal records.

Their teachers at the veterinary department of Novocherkassk College of Industrial Technologies and Management gave them positive references.

The judge also noted they had cooperated with investigators.

Relatives of the unnamed dead woman are shocked and have submitted a claim for 'moral damages' and launched an appeal seeking 900,000 roubles compensation - £9,400

Here's Why William Shatner Returning for Star Trek 3 Makes Sense

 As is to be expected, the Internet is all a-buzz with the latest rumors concerning Star Trek 3. It’s been a crazy week for the third installment in the rebooted franchise – we’ve learned it will probably start shooting in February, that the story will most likely take place in deep space during the crew’s five year mission, and that the characters should hew more closely to their TV counterparts. That’s a lot of info – but the real bombshell was the revelation that William Shatner might re-don his Starfleet tunic and appear in the new film. Naturally, like all things Star Trek, this news provoked two distinct and opposite reactions: fan jubilation and fan derision. I think bringing Shatner in for a part in the new film is actually a good idea, and here are a few reasons why.

The most obvious rationale for bringing Shatner back into the fold is plain old fan service. I know some of the Star Trek fanbase is really tired of seeing the new films (which went out of their way to try to divorce themselves from original canon, then take every opportunity they can find to tie back into it…) present updated riffs on classic Star Trek. I can even sympathize with that viewpoint at times, if only because it doesn’t feel fair to the new crew to constantly have them playing second fiddle to fan nostalgia.

That being said, having Shatner return as Kirk is a bit more interesting than working Khan into the second film, or any of the other nods littered throughout Star Trek ’09 or Into Darkness. This is Captain Kirk – without him and Leonard Nimoy, we don’t have a Star Trek to reboot. We haven’t seen Kirk and Spock together since 1991. It’s time for this to happen, even if it’s just a tiny cameo. In fact, maybe it’s best served by being a tiny cameo where we can all have a minute to remember what made us love this franchise in the first place and then move on.

Abrams and company had an opportunity to do this with 2009 film, which gave Nimoy’s Spock a pretty prominent role, but excised Shatner completely. Had Abrams’ worked both characters into Trek ’09, we could have had our moment to acknowledge two beloved characters, then gotten on with getting to know the new crew. Instead, the Shatner omission has made it feel like there’s unfinished business to be addressed – business that should have been dealt with two films ago.

 There’s an issue of fairness and respect here, too. Leonard Nimoy and William Shatner are both irreplaceable parts of what made Star Trek into a cultural phenomenon. Life – and filmmaking – aren’t always fair. But bringing Nimoy back for both films (although, really, they shouldn’t have bothered with Into Darkness), while leaving Kirk dead in the older continuity was a horrible decision at the time – and has grown even worse in retrospect. Shatner made his displeasure with being cut out of the 2009 entry well known, and I can understand why he was stung by it. Star Trek is, and always will be, the thing we identify him with as an actor. Captain Kirk was his career-defining role. Including his friend/nemesis Nimoy in both of the reboots while keeping Shatner on the sidelines was a lousy thing to do, no matter how much of a jerk the man can be at times.

This is to say nothing of the fact that Paramount has already made a big deal about the new film opening in 2016 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the original series. How can you have a 50th anniversary celebration without Shatner being part of it in some fashion? You really can’t.

If that doesn’t convince you, then maybe this will – William Shatner is 83 years old. He’s in relatively good health, but once you cross into your eighth decade, you’ve entered the latter stages of your life. There aren’t going to be a lot of opportunities left for Shatner to appear on the screen as Captain Kirk. Same goes for Leonard Nimoy, who’s also 83. If Nimoy were to be done, at least we could look back at the first reboot and happily acknowledge that we got to see Spock again. To see Kirk, we have to go back to 1994’s Star Trek Generations. That’s two whole decades ago. It’s time to change that, before time runs out once and for all. Let’s not have that happen, and give Shatner the sendoff he deserves should this be the last time he appears as Kirk.

Chinese fan dies after staying up too late to watch the World Cup

A Chinese fan has reportedly died after after staying up for too many nights in a row to watch the World Cup. 

A 25-year-old man was found in his home in Suzhou, an area near Shanghai, sat infront of a TV set just hours after Holland's 5-1 thumping of Spain on Friday.

Salvador, the Brazilian city where the game took place on Friday, is 11 hours behind Shanghai, meaning fans in China have to stay up all through the night to follow the tournament.

With the game kicking off at 4pm local time, it did not finish in China until around 5 in the morning, and doctors believe his death could have been caused by the sleep deprivation.

Medical experts have now warned football fans in China about the dangers should they sacrifice sleep during the tournament.

It's not the first time a Chinese football fan has died after staying awake to watch the game.

During Euro 2012 one supporter spent 11 sleepless nights watching every game of the tournament and died from exhaustion.

Chinese hospitals also saw a surge in patients admitted with symptoms of exhaustion during the World Cups in 2006 and 2010.

Robin van Persie and Arjen Robben both scored twice as Oranje ran riot against the current world champions.

Below is a rough transcription of the interview. 

Press TV: Mr. Chossudovsky, today we have Israel threatening Moscow possibly with force. 

How does Israel play into this equation and how much physical involvement can we expect from Israel? 

Chossudovsky: Well, first I should say that Israel is supporting the insurgency. In other words, it is supporting al-Qaeda in Syria. 

This is not known to public opinion but through the Golan Heights, it is supporting terrorist units of al-Nusrah, which are fighting the Syrian government. 

It has logistics, weapon supplies, Israeli vehicles going into the Syrian territory, it also has a hospital facility for the rebels located in the Golan Heights. 

So, in effect, right from the outset Israel has been involved in supporting the various factions, the so-called Islamist factions, which are, as we know, mercenaries trained in Qatar and Saudi Arabia. 

So, in effect, we have to ask ourselves who are the main military actors in the Syrian war theater. The al-Nusrah rebels, which allegedly represent the opposition, are supported by the Western military alliance and Israel. 

These are the foot soldiers of the Western military alliance and they are waging a war against the Syrian people.

Now when the European Union decides to lift the embargo, the arms embargo, what they really have in mind ..., it is not to say that they have not been supplying the rebels with weapons, all the time they have; but what they have in mind is to channel military aid to this mercenary force, which is supported by foreign powers. 

That is a very different proposition to the Russians or Iran for that matter, through bilateral agreements providing military assistance to a sovereign country and to a government and in effect what we are also dealing with is..., well it is illegal under the international law but it is also in violation of the US’ anti-terror legislation. 

Press TV: Mr. Chossudovski, recently US senator John McCain went to Syria via Turkey. How do you interpret this visit?

Chossudovsky: Well, John McCain['s trip] is actually in blatant violation of the US’ guidelines on anti-terrorism. 

There is an anti-terrorist list, there is a list of terrorist organizations, which is made up by the State Department and John Kerry is negotiating, interfacing, with representatives of that terrorist organization and the same thing is true for John McCain when he crosses into Syria or the same thing is true with the former ambassador to Syria Robert Steven Ford, who is also supporting these terrorists. 

So we have to distinguish between military aid through official channels, from government to government, which is what the Russians are providing to Syria on the one hand and the type of assistance which Israel, Britain, France, the United States, are channeling to an illegal organization according to their own criteria.

So in other words they should be arrested on anti-terrorist charges because they are in violation of international law. 

Press TV: Despite the fact that the European Union has lifted arms embargo on Syria, how optimistic are you that the Geneva II talks would bear fruit and resolve the Syrian crisis politically? 

Chossudovsky: Well, I think that the Western leaders are, in effect, attempting to build peace and democracy by threatening war. Essentially that is what they are doing, heightening the threats, channeling weapons to the terrorists, incidentally those terrorist have been decimated by the Syrian Armed forced, so in effect the Western military alliance is in a dead end. 

So, they are now considering all the options but essentially if they were concerned and sincerely committed to the peace process, they would immediately cease supporting a terrorist organization which is linked to al-Qaeda and which is involved in atrocities and killings in Syria.

Galaxy Round -- a 5.7-inch concave handset that fits the curve of a user's palm -- has hit stores in South Korea but Samsung did not say when the new phone will be available globally.
Curved screens -- billed as lighter and thinner than current display panels -- are at a nascent stage in display technology, which is shifting towards flexible panels that are bendable or can even be rolled or folded.
The new phone -- powered by Google's Android system and featuring a 2.3 GHz quad-core processor --is priced at about 1.08 million won ($1,000), Samsung said.

"The display (of Galaxy Round) is ergonomically shaped to fit the curve of a hand and comfortably embrace an ear and cheek during a phone conversation," SK Telecom, the country's top wireless operator, said in a statement.
The new phone allows users to check information such as missed calls, text messages, remaining battery life and the current time and date more easily when the screen is locked.

When listening to music, users can switch between songs on a playlist by placing the phone on a flat surface and pressing down on the left or right side to tilt the device, which automatically detects the movement.
The curved screen is made of plastic, instead of the glass that is commonly used in smartphones, and as a result the handset is slightly lighter.

Samsung said the phone weighs 154 grams (0.33 pounds), 10 percent less than the firm's similar-sized Galaxy Note III oversized smartphone.
"This certainly is not a ground-breaking, game-changing product," one tech blogger said in a review.
"But it fits quite nicely in my hand... and the images look slightly deeper when seen on a curved screen," he said.
The latest device arrived as global smartphone makers vie for growth in the increasingly competitive market.

Samsung -- the world's top maker of smartphones and mobile phones in general -- in January unveiled the prototype of a bendable display called "Youm".
Samsung's smaller rival LG said last week it had started mass production of curved display panels for smartphones and is reportedly set to unveil its own curved smartphone this month.
But companies still face a major challenge in making other handset components -- such as batteries -- that can bend with the rest of the unit.
Curved displays are already commercially available in large-screen televisions offered by companies including Samsung and LG.
The displays are supposed to offer a more immersive viewing experience but are significantly more expensive than standard screens.
